‘You will always remember where you were … when you heard the news,’ Simon Cowell says, echoing the sentiments after Jackson’s death.
By Tomika L. Anderson

<P>Few people will forget where they were when they heard that the King of Pop, <a href="/news/articles/1614744/michael-jackson-dies-at-50.jhtml">Michael Jackson, had died</a> in June 2009. And now, the same can be said for 1980s and '90s <a href="/news/articles/1679029/whitney-houston-dead.jhtml">Queen of Pop Whitney Houston</a>.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Celebrities React To Whitney Houston's Passing" id="vid:733106.id:1679030" width="240" height="211"></div><p></P><P>The beloved, long-suffering singer died Saturday inside a Beverly Hills hotel room, hours before she was expected to attend a <a href="/news/articles/1679046/whitney-houston-dies-grammys-clive-davis.jhtml">pre-Grammy Awards party thrown by her longtime mentor Clive Davis</a>.</P><P>And while the official cause of death is yet unknown &#8212; what's been speculated so far is that <a href="/news/articles/1679049/whitney-houston-dies-details.jhtml">Houston may have drowned</a> in the bathtub after taking prescription drugs, including Xanax &#8212; given her very public struggle with substance abuse, depression and anxiety over the past decade, it's hard not to conclude that some drug- or alcohol-related accident may have been to blame.</P><P>It's much like, most recently, British singer Amy Winehouse and the late, great Michael Jackson before her, who died after taking a fatal cocktail of propofol and two other drugs. Also like Jackson, Houston's sudden death &#8212; at the age of 48 &#8212; has stopped the world in its tracks, an enormous, one-of-a-kind musical flame forever extinguished.</P><P>Even Jackson's brother, Jermaine &#8212; who was first introduced to Houston years ago by Clive Davis at the same Beverly Hills Hilton where the singer passed away &#8212; could not help but draw the comparison. In an interview with CNN overnight, he paid tribute to the two fallen musical giants. "They shared a lot of success in the late '80s and they were great friends," he said. "I'm happy and honored to have been a part of their lives."</P><P>And oh, what lives they led: Like Jackson &#8212; who died at just 50 years old, after years of struggling with personal demons &#8212; Houston, too, had an intensely profound and everlasting impact on the world of entertainment.</P><P>Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson and countless other chart-topping entertainers have all name-checked her as their musical mentor, icon and inspiration: To date, she is one of the best-selling artists of all time, with more than 170 million albums, songs and videos sold.</P><P>In her lifetime, Houston achieved what precious few of them have or ever will &#8212; stacking an astonishing 415 awards, including six Grammys, two Emmys, 22 American Music Awards, 30 <i>Billboard</i> Awards.</P><P>Her voice, in its prime, was a national treasure.</P><P>"X Factor" mastermind Simon Cowell may have summed it up the best: On "Piers Morgan Tonight," he said, "She was one of the greatest voices in our lifetime. Whitney was the number one singer that other singers want to emulate. People like that can't be manufactured. They've either got, it or they don't."</P><P>He added, "You will always remember where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news."</P><P>Like Michael before her, gone too soon.</P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:733107/cp~id%3D1679030%26vid%3D733107%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A733107%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></P><P><b>MTV News' Sway and James Montgomery will be live from the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammys</a> red carpet tonight starting at 5 p.m. ET to get reactions from music's biggest stars on the death of Whitney Houston. We look at Britney’s $15 million deal and what that kind of reality TV money can buy.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>$15 million. Sure, on the surface that number seems pretty gaudy, especially when you consider it's for <a href="/news/articles/1684813/britney-spears-x-factor-judge.jhtml">one season</a>&#8232; of work on a reality TV show that will add up to maybe one month's work in total for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>.</P><P>But we're talking Britney here and when you aim to reel in the big fish you have to use a <I>really</I> big worm. That might explain why Simon Cowell has gone all-in to get Spears to join him and L.A. Reid on the panel of "Factor" this fall. ‘I could get whatever I want,’ 21-year-old Harlem rapper tells MTV News about her new record deal with Kanye West.

Teyana Taylor collaborated with Kanye West on his 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and now, as an official member of the G.O.O.D. Music team, the Harlem rapper confirms that she will also appear on the upcoming G.O.O.D. compilation album.

When MTV News caught up with Taylor after news broke that she’d officially been added to the Def Jam roster, she said the deal was finalized in April. “I had been actually working with the whole G.O.O.D. Music family for quite a while,” she explained. “Around the time we did the ‘Dark Fantasy’ song, I was still in my contract with Star Trak/Interscope Records, and I asked for release because I wanted to find myself as an artist. I had options to go to different labels, but I felt like G.O.O.D. Music was where I wanted to be, where I fit in.

“This is the second go ’round for me, and hopefully, the second time’s the charm,” the 21-year-old continued. “I signed to Star Trak with Pharrell when I was 15, and now I’m at a new chapter in my life where I’m signed to G.O.O.D. Music, and I’m blessed and happy to be part of the team.”

The rapper, singer, writer and actress said the new deal will definitely improve her worth ethic. “Being signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam has opened more doors now that I finally have a team behind me that can push me to work harder,” she said.

Taylor has already recorded her tracks for the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album, another humbling experience. “Recording ‘Dark Fantasy’ and recording the G.O.O.D. Music album was both crazy,” she shared. “When we did ‘Dark Fantasy,’ the album had to be turned in in three hours, so that was a song that we made happen so last minute, which happened to be the first song on the album, so that was very exciting.

“The same amount of work, same amount of pressure, same amount of heart, intensity, passion [went into recording the G.O.O.D. Music LP]. It was a great experience to be able to work with someone like Kanye and with Pusha T, Big Sean, Kid Cudi, Common and the whole G.O.O.D. family. When it’s time to do something, we all come together, we make it work, everyone’s focused.”

Taylor recorded with West in both Los Angeles and New York, laughing off rumors that the crew ticked off the Royal Family while recording in London.

Right now, Taylor is simply enjoying her new family circle. “I am the princess of G.O.O.D. Music, the first lady of G.O.O.D. Music, the baby of G.O.O.D. Music,” she said, laughing. “I’m kinda the spoiled brat right now. I could get whatever I want.”

Bieber’s mentor and dance-off foe will debut his new track ‘Twisted’ on ‘MTV First: Usher,’ airing tonight at 7:54 p.m. on MTV.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> and his mentor, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a>, believe it or not, have engaged in a dance-off or two. While Bieber is certainly known for his ability to cut a rug, he noted that his pal has the smoother of the dance moves.</P><P>"Dance-offs? We had one the other night. He did this little show in New York," Bieber explained to MTV News earlier this month about facing off against Usher during his stint in the off-Broadway <a href="/news/articles/1685172/usher-fuerza-bruta-rehearsal.jhtml">"Fuerza Bruta" in April</a>. "Mid-show, he comes in the middle of the dance floor and does a dance battle with me. And I'm like 'I'm too tired for this.' He pulls out moves and I can't <i>not</i> dance battle Usher.</P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Get Ready For 'MTV First: Usher'!" id="vid:768876.id:1685086" width="415" height="255"></div><p></P><P>"So I go in there, do my whole thing," he recalled. "I'm pretty sure I lost, but it's all good."</P><P>When they aren't battling it out on the dance floor, it seems Usher is offering up some sage advice to the 18-year-old singer. "He's just given me the advice of 'Always keep the people that were there in the beginning, keep them with you because those are the people that really care. They want to see you succeed,' " he said. "I think that's probably pretty much the main thing he's always told me."</P><P>Usher has even more to share about working with his superstar mentee. He will open up during <a href="/news/articles/1685095/usher-twisted-climax-scream-mtv-premiere.jhtml">"MTV First: Usher,"</a> set to take place tonight at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. He will introduce exclusive footage from "Fuerza Bruta" and his new single, the Pharrell-produced "Twisted," and will stick around for an interview with MTV News' Sway Calloway to discuss it all, including his new June release, <a href="/news/articles/1685178/usher-looking-4-myself.jhtml"><i>Looking 4 Myself</i></a>, on MTV.com afterward. ‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’

"I am a Led Zeppelin fan. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon.</P><P>"I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

‘It’s crazy, but it’s good,’ actress tells MTV News at film’s London premiere.
By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Kristen Stewart
Photo: MTV News

Kristen Stewart is throwing away her damsel-in-distress image and taking up arms against the evil queen, Ravenna (Charlize Theron), in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” In her sword-wielding debut, Stewart leads the fight to reclaim the kingdom from Ravenna, and with that comes an inspiring call to arms. When the actress spoke to MTV News at the London premiere of the upcoming film, she revealed her concerns about pulling off the speech credibly.

“We saved it until the very last day, actually,” she said. “We re-wrote it every single day of the shoot. Me and [director] Rupert [Sanders] had it in our back pocket the entire time. Ultimately, I don’t think that it makes a whole lot of sense, but it feels right. Do you know what I mean? It’s very up-in-the-air; it’s very subjective until the very end. Until some — I don’t want to give anything away, but until the very obvious line. It’s so Bravehearty. It’s crazy, but it’s good. It’s good.”

Judging by the screaming that greeted Stewart when she hit the red carpet, it doesn’t seem like her fame is about to die down anytime soon, even with “The Twilight Saga” nearing its end. In fact, the actress said that the fans at the “Snow White” premiere reminded her of past “Twilight” crowds. “It feels very similar actually,” she said. “I was expecting it to be — not smaller — just, I didn’t think it would be like this.”

And even though Stewart has yet to see boyfriend Robert Pattinson in “Cosmopolis,” she revealed he’s already seen her in action as the revamped Disney princess. “He likes it. He really likes it. It’s cool. It’s good. I’m really proud of it,” she said.

As she should be, since the actress’ transformation into a rousing action star makes this film one of the most highly anticipated movies of the summer. So how exactly will she wind down after a successful premiere?

In true Kristen Stewart fashion, the actress replied, “I love what I’m wearing, but I’m going to take this thing off, first off. [I'll] probably get into some jeans.”

Audiences can see Stewart don armor and chainmail when “Snow White and the Huntsman” hits theaters June 1.

The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at the comic inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

<i>Batman</i> #497: The breaking of the Bat
Photo: DC Comics

Throughout his tenure as the commander of the big-screen Batman, Christopher Nolan, along with writing partners Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, have pulled selectively from the vast library of books for inspiration in the films. “Batman Begins” borrowed a handful of elements from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” while “The Dark Knight” took some character notes from “The Long Halloween.”

When it was announced that Bane would make his triumphant return as a respectable villain in the finale, “The Dark Knight Rises,” comic books fans were just as quick to shout “Knightfall,” in reference to the trilogy of stories that played out during 1993 and 1994. It appeared Nolan and company had found their inspiration, but what exactly would they use from those books?

Bane
The masked villain was the clear giveaway to “Knightfall” ‘s presence as an influence, and it’s clear why. Bane only showed up on the DC Comics scene four months before the beginning of the “Knightfall” story line, and once the show got on the road, he made his introduction count. As he appears to be in “The Dark Knight Rises,” the Bane of the comics was a hyper-intelligent behemoth of a man, capable of besting Bruce Wayne.

Prison Break
Part of Bane’s plan in gaining the upper hand over Batman involved releasing all of Arkham Asylum’s worst inmates on the city. Batman wears himself down, rounding up the likes of the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy, and this series of bouts leaves him severely weakened when he finally has to face off against Bane in the Batcave, leading to the most significant scene from “Knightfall.”

The Break
If Bane is remembered for anything, it is the central moment of “Knightfall” when he takes a physically and mentally exhausted Bruce Wayne and breaks his back with a knee to the spine. It was a critical blow in more than one sense of the word and significantly changed the shape of the Batman titles for years to come. The scant footage we have actually seen from “The Dark Knight Rises” hints that Christian Bale‘s Bruce Wayne does suffer some similar injury during the course of the film. He appears to be walking with a cane, and while we can’t conclusively blame Bane, the timing sure is something!

Catwoman
Selina Kyle’s appearance in both “Knightfall” and “The Dark Knight Rises” most likely is a coincidence, since her role in the former is not terribly significant. It does matter, however, that she attempts to help Bruce Wayne with his paralysis, demonstrating that there are many facets to her allegiances.

The New Batman
While Bruce Wayne was on the mend thanks to Bane’s handiwork, a new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley, took up the cowl in his absence. Since the tag line of “The Dark Knight Rises” leaves little doubt that the “legend ends” with this final movie, fans have been pondering whether the new film will mean the death of Bruce Wayne. If that’s the case, the symbol would have to live on. A new Dark Knight would have to rise.

Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.”

With Simon Cowell rumored to be courting a raft of pop princesses for season two, we grade the judges-to-be.
By James Montgomery

<P>By now, we're all aware that Simon Cowell is reloading. After largely firing blanks on the first season of "The X Factor," he cleared the chamber &#8212; casting off <a href="/news/articles/1678191/paula-abdul-exits-x-factor.jhtml">judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger</a> (not to mention host Steve Jones) &#8212; and is now in the process of lining up a collection of high-profile, hollow-point replacements with which to take down the competition.</P><P>Of course, just <i>who</i> Cowell ends up nabbing seems to be a matter of some speculation: His <a href="/news/articles/1682881/britney-spears-x-factor-deal.jhtml">$15 million deal with Britney Spears</a> appeared to be a near certainty, but in the weeks since it was first reported, there's been no movement. And now come rumors that he's courting the likes of <a href="/news/articles/1684289/demi-lovato-x-factor-judge-miley-cyrus.jhtml">Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Avril Lavigne</a> to join the "X Factor" team. Are those names just part of a shrewd ploy from Cowell to get Spears to relent on her reported contract demands and insistences on "various perks"? Or is he truly determined to assemble an all-star lineup for the "Factor"? Really, your guess is as good as ours.</P><P><center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:632232/cp~vid%3D632232%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A632232" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center></P><P>Needless to say, we're not sure <i>who</i> will be joining the "X Factor" panel when the show returns later this year (though we suspect Fox may shed some light on the matter at an upfront event for ad buyers on May 14). So, in the meantime, we're just going to take a look at <i>all</i> of the potential judges, comparing their strengths and weaknesses in an attempt to help Cowell put together a potential Murderer's Row. Because we <i>want</i> the "X Factor" to succeed … lord knows we don't have enough singing competitions on TV at the moment.</P><P>Here's our no-holds-barred scouting report for each of the "X Factor" hopefuls:</P><P><big><b>Britney Spears</b></big><br> <b>Strengths</b>: Spears would instantly become the most famous judge on <i>any</i> U.S. singing competition (sorry Xtina!), therefore automatically raising the profile of a show in desperate need of a good boost. It's the rare combination of both a "career" and a "contemporary" artist, giving the show an answer to "Idol" 's Steven Tyler/ J. Lo combination <i>and</i> the four-headed monster of Aguilera, Adam Levine, Cee Lo and Blake Shelton on "The Voice." As a bonus, she would also fill the "rambling" slot vacated by Abdul, not to mention the "thousand-mile stare" void left when Scherzinger got the boot.</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: <link type="content" id="1579025">It's Britney</i>: Live TV may not exactly suit her.</P><P><big><b>Demi Lovato</b></big><br> <b>Strengths</b>: At just 19 years old, Lovato would give Cowell an in-road to the younger, Disney-fied demographic he so desperately craves. Can definitely sing (check her terrific tear-jerker <link type="content" id="1667271">"Skyscraper"</link> for proof), which automatically puts her ahead of something like 90 percent of her singing-competition contemporaries. Has the kind of <a href="/news/articles/1651297/demi-lovato-enters-treatment-center-leaves-tour.jhtml">harrowing backstory</a> that would automatically shut down any hard-luck contestants looking for a few pity points.</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: Older viewers might confuse her with Selena Gomez. Could also forget where she is, accidentally reenact that one episode of "Sonny with a Chance" when she's framed for stealing a necklace and subsequently fires a cheese cannon.</P><P><big><b>Miley Cyrus</b></big><BR> <b>Strengths</b>: An established star (with a <a href="/news/articles/1653979/miley-cyrus-caught-smoking-from-bong-on-video.jhtml">slightly checkered past</a>), which would give "X Factor" the kind of constant tabloid attention it failed to generate in season one. Has proven on songs like "The Climb" and her recent cover of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" that she's actually got a great voice, which, like Lovato, puts her in rarefied air. Could also use the show as a way of launching the next phase of her career, which would be mutually beneficial and might just spawn something like the certified "Voice" smash "Moves Like Jagger."</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: May currently be better known for her paparazzi coverage than her actual music. Might take another hit of salvia and confuse every male contestant with Liam.</P><P><big><b>Avril Lavigne</b></big><br> <b>Strengths</b>: Has been at it for a while now, has more genuine hits than anyone except Spears. She's also got <a href="/news/articles/1620572/avril-lavigne-guest-judge-idol-la.jhtml">previous judging experience</a> and seems to be genuinely concerned with her artistic integrity. And although her <i>Goodbye Lullaby</i> album didn't match the commercial heights of her previous efforts, you can't fault her for aiming high.</P><P><b>Weaknesses</b>: Preternaturally appears to be 14 years old. May always wear a hoodie during shows. Is constantly making the "sucking a lemon" face. Doesn't exactly strike us as a <i>people</i> person.</P><P><i>Sound off with your picks for "X Factor" judges in the comments below!</i></P><P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1617615"><img src="http://www.mtv.com/news/photos/s/spotted/banner/spotted.jpg"></a></p>

The FOX show’s very long and public search for judges is making it look desperate.
By John Mitchell

<P>On Wednesday (May 2) we learned that <a href="/news/articles/1684289/demi-lovato-x-factor-judge-miley-cyrus.jhtml">Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne and Miley Cyrus</a> are all being courted as possible replacements for Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger on "The X Factor" judging panel.</P><P>But don't get your knickers in a twist &#8212; "The X Factor" originated in Britain, after all &#8212; <a href="/news/articles/1680782/britney-spears-x-factor-judge-offer.jhtml">Britney Spears is reportedly</a> still in the game too, though reports that she "insisted on various perks that have bogged down negotiations" are floating around.</P><P>So to be clear, Britney might still be in, Demi is close to a deal and Miley and Avril are on the table. A few months ago, we could have replaced the Demi with Janet Jackson and Miley with Mariah Carey. And prior to her tragic passing in February, Whitney Houston was also being considered for the panel, according to remaining judges <a href="/news/articles/1679472/american-idol-voice-x-factor-simon-cowell.jhtml"> L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell</a>.</P><P>Never before has the casting process for a reality television show judge been so exhaustingly long and public. Sure, before Jennifer Lopez signed on to "American Idol" there were rumors that she was being pursued, but no public statements were made until she had signed on the dotted line. And while the constant stream of potential candidates being leaked to the press or talked about openly by Reid or Cowell may itself be a negotiation technique &#8212; most likely to try to ambush Spears into signing on for fear of being replaced &#8212; is also doing something <i>very</i> specific to the troubled signing competition.</P><P>It is making "The X Factor" look desperate. <i>Really</i> desperate.</P><P>With the FOX upfronts just two weeks away and filming on the production scheduled to begin early this summer, it's not exactly encouraging that the show cannot secure above-the-title talent. An upfront is a showcase hosted at the start of important advertising sales periods by network executives, and they are attended by the press and, more importantly, major advertisers.</P><P>"The X Factor" is a costly show for FOX, and the deal on the table for Spears, <a href="/news/articles/1682881/britney-spears-x-factor-deal.jhtml">reported to be $15 million per season</a>, certainly isn't bringing the budget down. Watching the never-ending parade of potential judges unfurl and then walk away &#8212; and keep in mind that the show is also casting about for two hosts to replace Steve Jones &#8212; cannot be serving the show well with eagle-eyed advertisers watching closely to see where their money will be best spent.</P><P>Conducting contract negations so publicly is always a risky endeavor, but in this specific case, "The X Factor" has backed itself into a corner. The show looked silly when talks with music legends Jackson and Carey fell through after <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2012/02/17/janet-jackson-x-factor-rumors-perfect-fit-for-show/">so much public discussion</a>, and in making the details of Spears' deal public and then failing to (at this point) lock her in, execs at "The X Factor" look borderline inept.</P><P>There's been some discussion that by tossing Miley, Avril and Demi's names into the ring, the show is trying to make Spears seem replaceable and get her to back down on her alleged "various perks."</P><P>It's a dirty way to conduct business and ultimately doesn't speak well of what is going on behind the scenes in the show's search for its new panelists. If that is indeed the case, it's like the show is grasping at straws. And that's not the best look when you are walking into the FOX upfronts seeking advertisers on the heels of an underperforming first season.</p>

Lynn announced during a show Thursday that she intends to bring ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ to the stage, with Deschanel to star.

Zooey Deschanel has already tackled movies, television, music, bangs, “crafternoons” and commercials in which she needs a robotic assistant to tell her whether or not it’s raining, and now, it looks like she’s set to take on Broadway, too.

During a Thursday night Grand Ole Opry show at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, country legend Loretta Lynn announced that she intended to bring her life story to the Great White Way, and that she had pegged Deschanel to play her in the production. Lynn then invited the actress onto the stage to sing her iconic (and autobiographic) hit “Coal Miner’s Daughter.” Obviously honored, Deschanel told the audience that Lynn was her “hero.”

“Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which tells the story of Lynn’s childhood in rural Kentucky, was a #1 hit for the singer in 1970, and would go on to be the title of her best-selling 1976 autobiography. In 1980, the book was made into a movie starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones, which earned Spacek a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of the singer.

Lynn told the Opry crowd that the Broadway adaptation would carry the same title, and (of course) would be a musical. There’s no word on just when the production would hit the stage, and a rep for Deschanel did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

Deschanel currently stars in Fox’s breakout hit “New Girl,” and has been making music for years, most notably as one half of She & Him (along with M. Ward). The duo released their third album, A Very She & Him Christmas, late last year.

Do you think Zooey Deschanel is a good fit for the role of Loretta Lynn? Let us know what you think in the comments!
